Many of us take lifetimes earnestly trying to discover the exact facets of our aspirations, but a lucky few have such a strong, overwhelming affinity for their passions that they discover them early on - able to sculpt their skills with the added advantage of time.

Dawit Eklund was born with the music already inside him.

Eklund experimented with production through grade school and continued on through college. He quickly became involved with the warehouse raves organized by other George Washington University students where he played his first DJ sets. He dived ever deeper into production, locking himself in his bedroom for days on end, tinkering with Ableton Live and exploring the technical aspects of recording, the science of modern synthesis. He was consumed with texts on music and its relationship to ancient mysticism and religion as well, drawing close to the work of Pythagoras and the mathematical relationship to harmony. His curiosity with Sufism, an inner mystical dimension of Islam, helped to confirm all of his initial instincts about music. For certain sects of Sufism, music is considered a divine art - one that can bring you closer to spirituality, to the divine. This belief makes the pursuit of music a noble cause that fights to elevate and enlighten the mundane. Dawit Eklund embodies and celebrates this belief in all of his work.

Dawit cofounded 1432 R alongside Sami Yenigun and Joyce Lim in 2014 and currently runs A&R for the independent boutique record label. 1432 R has been the pioneering platform for Ethiopiyawi Electronic and the work of Mikael Seifu and Endeguena Mulu; Dawit personally brought them in to the 1432 R fold. Last year Eklund made his production debut with the label on the A side of a single paired with Mikael Seifu called Psycho Animus, which Pitchfork writer Philip Sherburne compared with the works of house legends Larry Heard and Pal Joey. You can hear his contributions in recent Beautiful Swimmers track, 'Sleepyhead', as well as on the first Lifted project (Max D, Co La). Fans won't have to wait long for Dawit's debut solo EP, which is scheduled to be released on 1432 R in November of 2015. Hear a sneak peek of this release in his Wit It! Mix, certain to bring you closer to the sky.
